The fourth two week short course on “Applications of Remote Sensing & GIS in Agriculture and Allied areas” was conducted from 21st August to 1st September, 2023 at NESAC Outreach Facility, Umiam. Twenty nine participants were enrolled for the course which included Officers from state agriculture and horticulture departments, fishery departments, sericulture departments, faculty members from college and universities, scientists, research scholars and post-graduate students.
The inaugural programme on 29th August, 2023 was started with the welcome and briefing on the course schedule by Dr. B.K. Handique, Head ASD & the Course Director. Dr. S.P. Aggarwal Director, NESAC welcomed all the participants of the course and highlighted the importance of geospatial technologies in Agriculture and allied areas. Dr. Pradip Kumar Bora, Director, NERIWALM, Tezpur was invited as the Chief Guest of the inauguration programme.
A total of 15 theory classes and 11 practical sessions were conducted during the two weeks course. Two guest faculties, viz. Dr. Karun Choudhury (Head, CAD, NRSC) and Dr. Rosalin Tripathi, Scientist-SF, SAC, Ahmedabad delivered lectures on “Crop damage assessment and crop insurance” and “Crop yield modeling” respectively. A field visit was conducted on 26th August 2023 to Sohra, where the activities at the Doppler Weather Radar were demonstrated. Five distinct mini projects were assigned to 6 groups, each focusing on relevant agricultural areas, which the participants carried out meticulously.
The valedictory program was conducted on 1st September, 2023 and Prof. D. Thakuria, Dean, CA (CAU-I), Kyrdemkulai was invited as the Chief Guest for the event. Course completion certificates were distributed during the valedictory Session. The program concluded with the vote of thanks offered by Dr. Pradesh Jena, Course Officer.
